Her father introduced her to race walking when he took up the sport after he suffered a back injury and could no longer run. Chapman competed in her first national 10K in 1993, met current coach Dave McGovern in 1994, and competed in my first USATF National Outdoors in 1995. After getting married and getting a real job, she semi-retired in 1996. Chapman returned to competition in 1999, and qualified for 2000 Olympic Trials in her first-ever 20K.
